The game started young for famous swimmer Caroline Gertrude Ederle. She was born in 1906 and stated competitively swimming as a teenager during the roarin' twenties. Some of her accomplishments were that she was the first woman to ever swim acrossed the English Channel, won a gold medal in the Olympics for the 400 meter freetyle and a bronze medal in the 100 meter race! From 1921 to 1925 she broke many American and world swimming records. (Sports in the 1920's 1). Her passion being swimming, she became a swim instructor and taught children. Ederle's greatest accomplishment as a swimmer was being elected and inducted into the Hall Of Fame in 1980 (Sports in the 1920's 1). Unfortunately, her career came to an end in 1933 due to a severe back injury, although she lived long after and overcame the injury, living to be 98. Caroline Gertrude Ederle died in Wyckoff, New Jersey, in 2003 (Later Life 1).
